In my MacBook 3,1 (Late 2007 Model), I have dual boot with MAC OSX Lion and Windows 7. This was working fine. Due to improper shutdown some OS file got corrupted and I couldn’t able to boot MAC OS again.
Googled various options from internet to repair and resolve the issues. Here I am going to journal the experiments I have took and share those experiences.
Initial Issue : When I start the MAC with Startup Disk as MAC OSX Lion, It shows the Apple Logo Indefinitely. Booting the Windows 7 works fine.
Identify What went Wrong in the MAC OS (Lion 10.7.5) :
Using Recovery Boot Option, (While Restarting MAC hold down the Option key to see the Recovery Boot Option). This has lot of options when something went wrong in your OS. This is a full fledged UI with option like Command Line, Disk Utility, Restore Backup and Even a Safari Browser & App Store to download the Fresh OS from Apple Store.
How the Recovery Partition works is, whenever you install the OS for the first Time, It also additionally creates a separate partition which will be used to recover your data, backup and perform disk operations which runs separately apart from your allocated OS partition.
After booting to the Recovery Partition, I used the Disk Utility option to identify what went wrong. This Listed the following.
FUJISTSU SATA HARD DISK 128 GB
– MACINTOSH HD
Here the BOOTCAMP is the Partition where the Windows 7 resides. In the Disk Utility we have some options like Verify Disk and Repair Disk. When I ran these operations on the MACINTOSH HD Partition, it thrown an error “Invalid Sibling Link”. Could not able to repair the DISK.
This clearly shows the OS got Corrupted and this stops to load the OS with a Apple Logo & Spinning Indicator. So, now way to repair the DISK. There are 2 chances either might HARDDISK might wornout or the files are damaged. But when I reviewed the SMART Status of HARD DISK it seems to be in good condition.
Backing Up : I know files are corrupted but still I want to take a entire backup of the DISK and used the same Disk Utility and created a .DMG file and saved it to my SEAGATE External HARD Disk
The MACINTOSH HD Disk Side : 74 GB. After taking Backup .DMG file 57 GB. After Backing up, formatted the Drive and tried Verifying and Repairing the DISK. There were NO errors or Issues. So, tried restoring the backed up .DMG to the drive and faced the same issue. ( OS Not loading and Disk Repair Failed). Now its time to Re-Install everything from Scratch. Am I going to lose all the Commerical Applications and Lot of Legacy Apps Installed on the MAC?. Lets see what happened.
Getting the OS and Preparing to Install :
Now, I have a fresh formatted MACINTOSH Drive with Mac OS X Extended File System (Journaled). Using the same Disk Utility, selected the Re-Install Lion option and it took me to the App Store to download the Latest OS Applicable for my MACBOOK. When I entered the User credentials it thrown an error, please use the username which you used earlier to install on this Device. Since I am the Second Hand user of this Macbook, I could not continue to download the OS from the App Store
So, Got a MAC OSX Lion 10.7 Retail Version .DMG file from one of my friend and used the same to re-install everything from scratch. I came to know that Installing through USB is faster than installing through DVD. So, with a 8GB SANDISK Pen Drive, Loaded the InstallESD.dmg file from the extracted MAC OSX Lion 10.7 Retail Version .DMG file and Created the Bootable USB Disk using the same disk utility. Creating a Bootable Pen Drive is simple using Disk Utility. Restore the InstallESD.DMG to the Pen Drive and disk utility takes care of doing necessary operations to make the disk bootable.
Note : Only MAC Hardware able to detect this Drive as this is created based on EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface ). When you open the Plug this Pen Drive to the Windows, you will not see any files.
Actual Installation Starts :
Plugged in the USB Drive and Restarted the MACBOOK. Now I can see one more option named “MAC OSX Lion” in the Boot Option. And everything goes normal as usual like prompting the Disk to be installed. Anyway I have only 1 Partition shown UnLocked (MACINTOSH HD) and remaining is Locked (BOOTCAMP & RECOVERY Partitions)
After couple of restarts , It took around 50 Mins to complete the Installation Process. Now its Time to Install the Basic Applications as before.
Do I need to pay/download all those Apps which I had earlier?.
Will copying the Application from the Backup will work?
The answer is NO. Because the Magic/Miracle comes in the form of Migration Assistant from the OS Itself. This Migration Application is basically helps you migrate your Data,Application and Other Settings from MAC to MAC. It also has a great feature to Import Data and Application from the Backup .dmg file. Just ran this assistant and all my applications restored backed from that backup.dmg file
Backup your Partitions Regularly. So, Its easier to just restore the image instead of starting everything from Scratch.
Even though the Repair Disk Failed, Don’t ignore to take a Backup before you format your drive. The Disk Utility might not able to repair the Disk. But the Application like “Migration Assistant” can able to read those backup and you can easily import your applications back.
SMART Status are self monitoring device which tells you how the device is. Most of the Hard Disks supports SMART Status.
BOOTCAMP is the Name given by Apple when you want to Install the Legacy Microsoft OS on a MAC Hardware.
