“Books are the greatest companion to a man” – UnKnown
The digital world has opened enough doors to push the habit of reading even more easily. These digital books cannot replace the Physical books completely but provides some alternate ways by providing some opportunity to get acquainted with the habit of reading for the starters
Being an avid reader i switched to e-books as it easy to find, store and read them on the go. I have been using a tablet for consuming content and reading books for the last 2 years. But i realized that there are some eye-strains which makes you fatigue when using these tablets which is made up of LED screens. The good part of these e-ink reader is they look like a paper book and they can be used to read in the Bright Sunlight also.
Please see here if you are not aware about e-Ink Readers. After researching with some available readers i decided to go with the reader NOOK Simple Touch which is sold by Barnes & Noble, the Book Store company.
There are lot of e-readers available in the market with their own unique features. The following are some of them. All of these device has WiFi Built in solely for the purpose of Syncing your Books and not meant for standard browsing, email etc.
Amazon Kindle Touch
Amazon Kindle Paper White
NOOK Simple Touch
NOOK Simple Touch with Glow Light
With compared to tablet, e-readers are specifically designed to read and doesn’t come with any other features. Amazon Kindle has some support for Web Browsing but its a pre-beta version. Each of these readers has running on its own tailor made OS. For Nook, its running on a Android OS base.
The Virtual Book :
Nook is really beautiful while reading and makes me feel as though i am holding a physical book. There are couple of physical buttons on the sides to navigate between pages. You can also swipe through the touch to navigate and other reading options.
It supports PDF and ePub formats. I prefer to go with .ePub format while loading the books as it provides lot
of options and preferences while reading like Font Size, Margins, Font family etc. Most of these options will not come for PDF formats.
WiFi Sync :
Loading your own books is a simple copy paste. Just connect the usb cable and place your ebooks from your PC/Mac. Apart from your own books you can also buy books from Nook Store. If you have multiple Nook Devices or Nook Apps, then all your Purchased books will be in sync. This means when you buy a book online from Nook store and later when your Nook Device connects to WiFi, it automatically downloads all the purchased books to keep in sync.
It has a Inbuilt 2GB storage but you can also extend by adding an microSD card to hold thousands of eBooks.
(Note : This feature of microSD card provided a way to Hack and Install Android App on to this Device.)
The battery stays for a long time. The manual says it can come for 2 months with fully charged and WiFi disabled.
Missing Features :
– You can’t send an email attachment to your Nook Device to get synced (something which Kindle supports this feature)
– Everytime you need to connect your USB to load the ebooks.
– No additional apps can be installed even though the NOOK is running on Android base.
Managing eBooks :
I keep all of my eBooks in Dropbox so that i can easily get it from multiple devices (Tablet,Laptop,PC,Phone) as dropbox app is available for most of the devices. I thought it will be great to have a Dropbox on my NOOK. Then after following this post E-Reader Monster i decided to install Android OS 2.1 on to the NOOK and installed the Dropbox and few apps too.
Now, the device has turned to a complete Android Tablet through which i can download all the Apps related to reading from the Android Market. I have installed couple of apps on this like Opera,Gmail,Kindle etc which made this NOOK simple touch to a NOOK Giant Touch.
e-Readers in India :
Currently e-readers in India are not much popular and its not much available except in some online stores. Recently Amazon opened their online store in India and started selling the Kindle e-Reader which come around 6000 INR.
Note : NOOK currently sold and given support only in US and they don’t have online Nook Store for Indian Market.
Hope you enjoyed this post.
